On my four-year Arrest-o'-versary: From Harvard to the Big House
Christmastime reflections on my 1,300 days of incarceration which attempt to make sense of the hopeless madness of America's prison system.
Since I gave this talk in a church while still living at a halfway house, I felt obligated to throw in some Jesus stuff towards the end since it seemed like it’d be rude not to, and I was worried I’d get in trouble going off on a pass to a religious institution whose moral underpinnings I’m entirely dubious about. But full disclosure, I don’t know if the modern Christian Jesus even existed at all, and if he did there’s absolutely no way he’d care whether or not you were willing to take a public oath swearing he was basically a zombie.
That would in fact be about the last thing he’d care about, and that kind of oath certainly wouldn’t change what he thought of you - Your works would.
Which can serve as a bridge to the next big piece I’m working on, which is gonna be somewhere in the neighborhood of Golden Silkworms in Pandora’s Box in length, and will be continuing on from part five of dreamers down from the mountains and covering the historical anthropology of the religions of the Mediterranean Sea over the past few millennia. But that’ll take a bit, so over the next few weeks I’m going to be releasing audio versions of my existing articles, which will be behind the subscriber’s paywall at first.
So stayed tuned for those, hope you enjoy the show, and thanks so much for reading and commenting!! -Dan
